Litter Box Care

This is a new addition to our kitty information area.

We have our own  way of handling our litter boxes.  This is what we have found to work best for us and our cats.

  1. use a extra deep litter box.
  2. we prefer hooded litter boxes.
  3. Glad Carpet & Room Deodorizer
  4. Dr.  Elsey's Precious Cat Litter :  crystal litter.
  5. litter entrance tray.
  6. Metal litter scoop

Ok let's get started.

The reason for a deep litter box is:   So the cat can't hang their bums over the edge and have issues with missing the box.   It doesn't mean you need to fill the box with a lot of litter either.   One side should be lower so the cat can get in.  But, still high enough for them not to stop just inside the box and hang their bums over the entrance.      If a young small kitten, you can use an empty shoe box in the front to give them a step up until they are bigger.

This box is a GOOD choice. Nice and deep good   front       entrance. Plus you can use this with or without the hood..

WRONG choice.

The entrance is to low and the cat and hang bum over the edge.

Another GOOD choice.

I wouldn't use the plastic scoop though.

*why later.

I prefer hooded litter boxes.  Some cats will not use them.  All of my cats will use a hooded litter box.  They seem to prefer the privacy it gives them. Plus it fees like a more secure stop to take care of business in peace.  The hood does help hold down the litter order.  You must scoop hooded boxes often so as the odor isn't enough for them not to want to go in their.

Glade carpet & Room deodorizer. GOOD product.

you are going to layer the bottom of the litter box, with the Glade carpet fresh.  Doesn't matter which fragrance you use.  Use what you like.

This layer is where the urine is going to collect.  The Glade powder will turn into a solid crystal urine cake. This take care of any urine odor and when you go to dump the litter box.  You don't have to pour off the pee and have that smell hit you.   Tap it with your scoop and it will come out in solid chunks of crystals.

Arm & Hammer Cat Litter Deodorizer with Baking Soda

WRONG product.

Baking soda products just does not work the same. or give the same results.

I have tried baking soda of all kinds.  It will not become solid.  Or take care of the odor.  It just turns into mush.

After you have your layer of the carpet powder, you are now going to layer in your crystal litter.  I usually put in at least a depth of 3 inches'.   I  have found my preference for "Fresh Step" type of Crystals.  But, I want that kind of quality and not have to pay all that money

Fresh Step® crystals cat litterPet Gold Crystals Premium Cat Litter

Tidy Cat 4 lbs. $14 to $12.

Precious Cat Long Haired LitterI use and recommend Dr. Elsey's Litter for Longhaired cats.

Works a lot better the plain clay litter.

Keeps down the odor of the solids and also great for those that worry about germs and bacteria.

Very light, so not heavy to carry  and will not clue up or stain your cats paws.

I have been using the pet gold litter tray for several years now.  It sits in front of the litter box and he catches all the loose litter that comes off the cats paws' I am sorry to say they do not  make it any more.  If anything comes out that works and available, I will add it here to share with you. ( sorry this tray is no longer available any where).

Metal Litter Scoop Just a plain metal scoop.  It's flat and weak. Don't even go there.

Never Plastic Scoops!

DuraScoop Cat Litter ScoopDuraScoop

good strong scooper and holds a good amount and will clean without falling apart on you.

You can also find other things that will work as a scoop in the kitchen section of your store.   They will last forever!

Always scoop your box often.  You should also totally dump the box and clean with a disinfectant.   I prefer to have another clean box to take that litter boxes space while the old one can now sit for an hour with a good disinfectant.
