If you must change the diet

Be it the dry food or the canned food.  You must do this in a way that doesn't upset the kitties tummy.   Which can mean.... Loose Stools!!
You really should go with a food that doesn't have ground yellow corn in it.  Just check the packaging labels for the ingredients.   The ground yellow corn really upsets their tummies and gives them gas.
To change the food over to another brand takes 14 days.  You start off with 90% of the original food the cat or kitten was on at it's birth home. I give people a small bag of food (which is now 50/50 of the kitten mixture) you will add 10% of the other NEW brand of kitten food.  Please keep them on some kind of kitten food till they are one year of age.  Each day add a little more food, making it 80% to 20% etc.  Till they are switched totally over to the new food.  You will know if you are changing them to fast as they will get loose stools.  If this is noted.  Then slow the process down.

How do I Pick cat food?

Here is the line of thought I used to pick food for my kitties.
Cats are considered to be "obligate carnivores," which means they must get protein and other nutrients from animal sources.  So we want to find them a food with a good quality of protein.  This should be done by the quality of meat in the food and not by extra fat in the food.  You can also check our  for numbers on protein/fat/fiber.
  • First look at the PROTEIN.

I like my kittens to have a least a protein content of 36% to 40%.  This protein shouldn't be from any kind of a meat by-products.  In canned foods I look for the protein to be around 10% to 11%.  Again.  No meat by-products should be listed on the can.
  •  Nasty by-products going in.  Means nasty business coming out!

  •   Second look at the FAT

  • Next read the fat content. I prefer to find that number below 20%.  Mostly it is to make sure they didn't get the protein content up, by adding a lot of animal fat, or any kind of fat to pump up the protein
  •     Third look at Fiber and what kind of fiber it is.

    • Fiber makes the stool soft.    2.5% makes for a firm stool and 4% it is starting to get on the loose side.   Some cats may need the high fiber in their diet. But if your seeing loose stools, cut back to a lower fiber content and also look to see what they are using as a fiber.
    • Then take a look to see if there is any ground yellow corn (which is a fiber)  in the food.  This gives the kitties gas:)  If there is a small amount of ground yellow corn, this may not be an issue with your cat. Some can not handle any ground yellow corn in their food.
  • We don't need our kitties passing gas in the house.  Again Ugh-O:(

  • in canned food I look for a fiber content less than 1%.

Check the ash content and of course it needs to have other good stuff in it to.   Taurine is also important for your kitty and this should be noted.   Fiber is also important and what type it is. Not ground yellow corn.
Most of this information is for kittens.  Adults cats needs are different.  As normal Your kitty is an individual and it's needs  should be in your thoughts and it's food should be picked according to it's special needs.

So read the labels and see the ingredients and don't forget to note the contents percentages!
